The Japan Federation of Bar Associations (the "JFBA") has issued multiple opinions regarding reforms to the criminal justice system periodically as required. In October 2018, the JFBA published the “Grand Design of Criminal Justice Reform for Preventing the Miscarriages of Justice”, and revised in December 2024.
This seeks to highlight the issues of the Japanese criminal system which cause miscarriages of justice (enzai, えん罪) and violate the suspects’ and defendants’ rights to be presumed innocent until proven guilty.
