The Minister of Justice announced that a study group would be established within the Ministry of Justice this August in order to consider the issues surrounding the death penalty including but not limited to its retention or abolition. In response to this announcement, the Japan Federation of Bar Associations submitted its request to the Minister of Justice on August 5 that executions be suspended until a thorough discussion and review of the death penalty system has taken place, including consideration of the retention or abolition of the system based on outcomes of the study group.
