August 5, 2010
Japan Federation of Bar Associations

The Judicial Affairs Division Meeting of the Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) reportedly decided on August 3, 2010, to launch a working team on the issues surrounding the death penalty system. In response to this announcement, the Japan Federation of Bar Associations (JFBA) submitted a paper to the DPJ requesting their consideration of concrete measures to establish research committees on the death penalty system in both the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors, as the JFBA has been proposing, in order to commence and continue detailed deliberations on the issues surrounding the death penalty in the Diet as well as to suspend executions while the issues are being deliberated in the research committees.
