President's message & JFBA Reception - The 2014 IBA Annual Conference in Tokyo
Welcome to Japan and the JFBA
In October 2014, the annual conference of the International Bar Association (IBA), one of the largest gatherings of lawyers worldwide, will take place in Tokyo. Around 6,000 lawyers and other legal professionals from all regions of the world are expected to come to Tokyo to attend the conference.
Established in 1947, the IBA is the largest organization of legal professionals, with more than 200 bar associations/law societies and 50,000 individual members. The JFBA joined the IBA in 1951, and actively participates in its activities to contribute to its objectives of promoting human rights, the rule of law, and independence of judiciary all over the world.
This year’s conference is very special as it is the first annual conference in East Asia after the IBA attained its current scale. The JFBA fully supports the conference as the bar association of the host country, with full consideration of the high expectation for legal professionals in Asia and the role of Japanese lawyers amid the internationalization of legal markets.
In addition, we will warmly welcome all of you to the reception that the JFBA will be hosting at the Bar Associations Building (Bengoshi-Kaikan) on October 20, 2014.
I strongly believe that this conference will provide opportunities for gaining new insights, as well as building and expanding professional networks, and I hope I will get to meet many of you personally during the conference.

The Japan Federation of Bar Associations (JFBA) Reception
The JFBA and the Host Committee will host receptions simultaneously as described below in mutual collaboration to welcome all the participants of the conference to Japan.
Bengoshi-Kaikan, the bar associations building which accommodates the JFBA and three local bar associations in Tokyo, is one of the largest bar buildings in the world, built solely with the membership fees of Japan’s bar associations.
The reception will be held with the theme of Japanese traditional festivals called “Matsuri”. The theme will allow you to have a variety of Matsuri experiences, including watching the performance of a Japanese traditional and energetic folk dance called Awa Odori and tasting Japanese food and drinks served in a typical Matsuri ambiance. In addition to these festive activities, JFBA will also prepare exhibitions introducing JFBA activities.
We look forward to seeing you in Tokyo.
