Declaration to Promote Diversity & Inclusion at the JFBA

February 15, 2024

Japan Federation of Bar Associations

The Japan Federation of Bar Associations (the “JFBA”) has compiled the following “Declaration to Promote Diversity & Inclusion at the JFBA” dated February 15, 2024.

Declaration

The Japan Federation of Bar Associations (the “JFBA”) conducts activities to advocate for human rights in various fields, aiming to protect fundamental human rights and achieve social justice. Such activities include those of providing redress to applicants in human rights redress cases who have suffered violations of such rights, as well as those of advancing the human rights of women, the LGBTQ community, persons with disabilities, and foreign nationals, among others. In addition, the JFBA has also carried out measures to promote gender equality and worked toward eliminating various forms of harassment.

The importance of efforts to respect diversity and promote inclusion (commonly referred to as “D&I”) has increasingly gained recognition throughout society in recent years. The concepts of diversity and inclusion encourage people to accept and respect different characteristics that people possess, creating an environment that allows the individuality and abilities of a diverse range of people to shine. As such concept spreads, it is changing more and more people’s minds, and it is expected that opening more people’s hearts up to the concept of D&I will lead to change in many systems that are in place throughout society, as well as the operation thereof. There is a need to show guidance toward a future where people with a diverse array of characteristics are accepted as they are in society, as well as within communities and organizations, thereby allowing people to make the most of their individuality and abilities while developing a fairer and more peaceful society where people are able to understand and live in harmony with each other.

To encourage this, the JFBA, having reflected on its previous human rights advocacy efforts in a systematic and multi-faceted manner and looked inward to confirm the universal principle of respecting diversity, hereby declares the intention to promote diversity and inclusion within our organization and to promote people’s respect for and acceptance of a diverse range of values.

The JFBA will work as follows to further strengthen our activities not only for attorneys who are JFBA members, but also all the other people involved in our activities, whereby we will aim to live up to public expectations and contribute to building a fairer and more just society where the human rights of all people are respected, and all individuals are accepted as they are and can make the most of their individuality and abilities.

1. Respecting Diversity

The JFBA will respect diversity and accept different characteristics and traits possessed not only by attorneys but also the other people involved in our activities, such as gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, nationality, race, ethnicity, origin, disability, illness, age, and family dynamics.

2. Promoting Inclusion

The JFBA will consider and accept the different characteristics and traits possessed by attorneys and the other people involved, in order to better maximize their abilities and individuality.

3. Building Awareness and Environment

The JFBA will work toward raising awareness and will develop an environment that respects diversity and promotes inclusion within our organization. We will also work to change and improve attorneys’ awareness through training and other awareness-raising activities, especially in order to eliminate various forms of harassment.
